Can Falling Be Prevented?

It is common for the elderly to fall. Research shows falling is the top cause of fractures and major injuries among the elderly population, and they primarily happen at home. Effective fall prevention methods can be implemented to help to reduce falling incidents. Keeping the body strong through regular exercise and stretching routines are beneficial in preventing many falls. Additionally, it is helpful to remove worn rugs, improve lighting in the living environment, and refrain from wearing slippers or walking barefoot. The bathroom may become safer when grab bars are installed in the shower and toilet area. Health can be maintained when regular physical and eye examinations are performed. This can also help to monitor existing medications and update eyeglasses if needed. Falling can impact the feet, and If you would like to learn more about successful fall prevention techniques, please confer with a podiatrist.

Preventing falls among the elderly is very important. If you are older and have fallen or fear that you are prone to falling, consult with Dr. Harris L. Klear from Burlington County Podiatry Associates. Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality advice and care.

Every 11 seconds, an elderly American is being treated in an emergency room for a fall related injury. Falls are the leading cause of head and hip injuries for those 65 and older. Due to decreases in strength, balance, senses, and lack of awareness, elderly persons are very susceptible to falling. Thankfully, there are a number of things older persons can do to prevent falls.

How to Prevent Falls

Some effective methods that older persons can do to prevent falls include:

  • Enrolling in strength and balance exercise program to increase balance and strength
  • Periodically having your sight and hearing checked
  • Discuss any medications you have with a doctor to see if it increases the risk of falling
  • Clearing the house of falling hazards and installing devices like grab bars and railings
  • Utilizing a walker or cane
  • Wearing shoes that provide good support and cushioning
  • Talking to family members about falling and increasing awareness

Falling can be a traumatic and embarrassing experience for elderly persons; this can make them less willing to leave the house, and less willing to talk to someone about their fears of falling. Doing such things, however, will increase the likelihood of tripping or losing one’s balance. Knowing the causes of falling and how to prevent them is the best way to mitigate the risk of serious injury.

Is My Toe Broken?

A broken toe is a common foot injury. It can happen because of a heavy object falling on it, or if it is stubbed on a piece of furniture. Broken toes are often accompanied by immediate bruising, and it may be difficult to walk. A broken toe is considered severe if the bone is protruding through the skin, and prompt medical attention should be sought. A diagnosis may consist of having an X-ray taken. Some broken toes can be treated by using the buddy taping method. This is when the broken toe is taped to the toe next to it for stability. The recovery time for a broken toe to heal can take up to six weeks. If you have fractured any of your toes, it is suggested that you speak with a podiatrist for proper diagnosis and treatment.

A broken toe can be very painful and lead to complications if not properly fixed. If you have any concerns about your feet, contact Dr. Harris L. Klear from Burlington County Podiatry Associates. Our doctor will treat your foot and ankle needs.

What to Know About a Broken Toe

Although most people try to avoid foot trauma such as banging, stubbing, or dropping heavy objects on their feet, the unfortunate fact is that it is a common occurrence. Given the fact that toes are positioned in front of the feet, they typically sustain the brunt of such trauma. When trauma occurs to a toe, the result can be a painful break (fracture).

Symptoms of a Broken Toe

  • Throbbing pain
  • Swelling
  • Bruising on the skin and toenail
  • The inability to move the toe
  • Toe appears crooked or disfigured
  • Tingling or numbness in the toe

Generally, it is best to stay off of the injured toe with the affected foot elevated.

Severe toe fractures may be treated with a splint, cast, and in some cases, minor surgery. Due to its position and the pressure it endures with daily activity, future complications can occur if the big toe is not properly treated.

When choosing or shopping for a running shoe, many runners and athletes consider a variety of factors. For example, runners might select a specific type of shoe because it is better suited to a particular kind of terrain. The degree to which running shoes might actually increase an athlete’s speed, however, is another important factor to consider when purchasing a pair of running shoes. This is to say that running shoes might actually make a runner faster because a good pair of running shoes will essentially increase one’s running economy. In other words, good running shoes might maximize the effort that a runner puts into their runs, ultimately increasing their speed. If you are someone who is looking for the perfect pair of running shoes, it is suggested that you contact a podiatrist today.

If you are a runner, wearing the right running shoe is essential. For more information, contact Dr. Harris L. Klear from Burlington County Podiatry Associates. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Choosing the Right Running Shoe for Your Foot Type

To increase performance and avoid the risk of injury, it is important to choose the right running shoe based on your foot type. The general design of running shoes revolves around pronation, which is how the ankle rolls from outside to inside when the foot strikes the ground.

  • Neutral runners are able to choose from a wide variety of shoes, including minimalist shoes or even going barefoot.
  • Runners who overpronate, or experience an over-abundance of ankle rolling, should choose shoes that provide extra motion control and stability.
  • Runners who underpronate, or supinate, have feet that have high arches and lack flexibility, preventing shock absorption. They require shoes with more flexibility and cushion.
